Re-thinking news: Information design and “antibody” contents

2022

Rethinking news and producing quality (“antibody”) contents as a remedy against the rampant proliferation of fake news (and the related erosion of democracy), starting from the values and approaches shared by the worlds of design and journalism can be - and certainly are - an effective and interesting way forward. The fertile confluence of the body of knowledge (and know-how) of these two disciplines has already produced excellent results, starting with design-driven experiments tried and tested in several significant experiences in Italy and abroad. As Paolo Ciuccarelli stated, “once again, designers as ‘meaning makers’ find today in the narrative of the world of the infosphere a design gr…

Le fake news ed il diritto all’oblio nell’era della rete. Sulla nuova relazione tra pubblico e privato

2021

This article analyses the new and problematic relationship between the media and individuals’ visibility, as well as privacy in the new context of the Internet, by focusing on the process of transformation of both the public and private dimensions. A new style of Self-presentation/representation emerges in the digital communication ecosystem, which presents numerous risks due to online overexposure, to the logic of the show, typical of infotainment, and to the process of social windowing. In the society of platforms and fake news, it is necessary to redefine the social role of journalism and its limits, above all when connected to some sensitive issues of individuals’ private sphere. At the…

La desinformació multimodal sobre l’alteritat a Internet. Difusió de boles racistes, xenòfobes i islamòfobes el 2020

2021

We are the people and you are fake news: a social identity approach to populist citizens’ false consensus and hostile media perceptions

2018

This study aims to investigate the relationships between citizens’ populist attitudes, perceptions of public opinion, and perceptions of mainstream news media. Relying on social identity theory as an explanatory framework, this article argues that populist citizens assume that public opinion is congruent with their own opinion and that mainstream media reporting is hostile toward their own views. To date, only anecdotal evidence suggests that both assumptions are true. The relationships are investigated in a cross-sectional survey with samples drawn from four Western European countries ( N = 3,354). Multigroup regression analysis supports our hypotheses: False consensus and hostile media p…

Audiovisual Verification in the evolution of television newsrooms: Al Jazeera and the transition from satellite to the cloud

2021

With the spread of the digital sphere and the proliferation of images from indirect sources that can be accessed by systems and users, verification routines have become essential to ensure media corporations' credibility. The advances in artificial intelligence which allow automated fact-checking (AFC) initiatives to be created help detect falsehoods, but they do not eliminate the need for human intervention. On the contrary, information professionals are necessary, and their functions increasingly include procedures such as mediating in videos and images. This study analyses the evolution of verification routines in audiovisual journalism and how new techniques have influenced the percepti…

Spreading of Competing Information in a Network

2020

We propose a simple approach to investigate the spreading of news in a network. In more detail, we consider two different versions of a single type of information, one of which is close to the essence of the information (and we call it good news), and another of which is somehow modified from some biased agent of the system (fake news, in our language). Good and fake news move around some agents, getting the original information and returning their own version of it to other agents of the network. Our main interest is to deduce the dynamics for such spreading, and to analyze if and under which conditions good news wins against fake news. The methodology is based on the use of ladder fermion…
